Surrey Cyber Security Cluster CTF
Posted on 18 October 2024
This year I became a member of the Surrey Cyber Security Cluster and have done my best to attend as many events as possible. It has been a great opportunity to learn new things and meet new people, and when I heard they were doing a CTF I had to compete! I joined in a team with a group of colleagues, and I mainly focused on the Packet Analysis challenges. Sadly, in the hectic CTF environment I forget to take any screenshots of the actual challenges, but I can summarise the ones I completed below:
- Decrypting data based on a leaked private key
- Re-combining corrupted data to find a flag
- Log forensics
- Wireshark packet analysis of C&C traffic
- Basic buffer overflows
- Web hacking - Cart checkout bypass
- PDF & Powerpoint File forensic
- Macro de-obfuscation
It was a really fun evening, the challenges continued over the next few days and I worked with my colleagues to complete the remaining challenges. Our team ended up placing first! I was able to attend a follow-up event to collect a small prise which was distributed around the team.
