BSides Basingstoke Mini Meet (Nov 2025)

I always really enjoy attending the BSides Basingstoke mini meets, they are a good chance to meet other Cybersecurity peeps, and the Dice Tower where it’s hosted is a fun venue; serving as a DnD pub and an event hosting space.

The talk this month was on “How Polygraphs work”, told from the view of someone who’s undergone one. The fact they are not legal in the UK was very reassuring, but I was surprised to find they are still quite common place in the rest of the world.

The biggest take away from the talk was they are nothing like the movies. The interviews go on for hours with large 30-second to one-minute gaps between each questions to make sure accurate readings are taken. Plus they are sensors EVERYWHERE even on the floor to try and detect the slightest movement or attempt to fool the test.
