BSides Basingstoke 2026

Once again ControlPlane gracefully sponsored the event which resulted in me duel welding badges both as a Sponsor and a Speaker. My work friend JC was very kind in offering to attend the booth while I was watching talks and giving my talk later in the day.
The keynote talk “Insecure Delivery of Drones” was simply fantastic, and I learned much more about the truth of drone warfare then I was expecting at the start of the day ha! The talk was not recorded so I will not be writing up any of the details.
I also really enjoyed the Beacon Butty talk which was giving background on and a demo of “A Raspberry Pi network appliance that catches malware command-and-control beacons on your LAN” which surprising accuracy! Even detecting a bug in Apple Calender which was causing a iPhone device to beacon out on regular intervals.
My talk “Threat Modelling OpenSource - Kyverno and the Kubernetes Kraken” was a combination of:
- Introduction to Threat Modelling
- Threat Modelling effort between ControlPlane, CNFC and Kyverno
- Disclosure of two CVEs discovered in Kyverno during the threat modelling process
I wanted to give a very whirlwind introduction to Threat Modelling and how it can be used to identify security vulnerabilities in OpenSource projects. Particularly why this is so important to do and give real-world examples of the vulnerabilities that can be discovered.
